Liberty 5-300 character traits: bodies were straight and thin as a blade of iron, eyes were dark and hard and glowing, no fear in them, no kindness, and no guilt. hair was golden, their hair flew in the wind, threw seeds from their hands, huge feet.
Some ways in which the society tries to rid people of of individualism is by using the words "we" instead of "I", which in itself is complete destruction of personal thought. Equality 7-2521 was even punished in school for excelling in math and science beyond his "brothers". The belief among the administrators of his society is that "if it is not held to be true by every member of society, then it cannot be true in reality" which makes any sort of development impossible.
There are many ways that this society tries to control each person's thoughts and values. The story says that they are not allowed to do many things and that they are against the law. It takes away their independence and sense of freedom. For example whenever the book talks about Liberty 5-3000 and they mention that they aren't even aloud to think about women or talk to them. It's like they can't have a mind or an opinion of their own.
3. Contrast Equality 7-2521 with the rest of the men living in this society.
Equality 7-2521 is different from all of the other men in the society in many ways. First of all, they are much smarter but they can't use it to their advantage because it is wrong to be different from other men. They are looked down upon and hated because of this, and it should be something they are praised for. Another reason is that they don't agree with all of the rules of the society. They secretly hate all of the rules that apply to them. Also, when they find the secret tunnel they decide not to tell the council. If they did, they would be punished greatly and they would be punished even more if someone found out they were keeping this secret. One last reason is that the men are not supposed to even talk to women unless they are at the Palace of Mating. Equality 7-2521 not only talks to Liberty 5-3000 but falls in love with her.
The prevalent emotion in the society, of the book ANTHEM is fear because the inhabitants do not want to commit a crime in the eyes of the Council members. The characters show fear because they are not willing to go against any of the "rules" such as speaking to another inhabitant such as the renamed friend, the "Golden One." Equality 7-2521 finally shows a bit of independence by saying hello to the Golden One in the afternoon while passing each other during their jobs. And by also renaming the Liberty 5-3000 to the Golden One. It is a crime in their society to rename another inhabitant because it is like making another more superior than another.
7. "Think about the character traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000 on page 38." *The characters in Liberty 5-3000 seem to have no civil rights. They don't have the Freedom of speech and they cannot stand up for themselves. They seem like cowards. Each person in Liberty 5-3000 are not allowed to take notice of the opposite sex. I think that each person have the capability of standing up for themselves but they don't have enough confidence to actually do it. It seems like Liberty 5-3000 is very sexist.
The character traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000 are straight in thin blad iron, their eyes were hard and dark. Their hair was golden, they also would throw seeds from their hands as if there were free.
4. Of the whole range of feelings possible to man (joy, excitement, anger, embarrassment, etc.)why is fear the prevalent emotion in this society?
Fear is the prevalent emotion because you can be put to death for so many things. There are so many rules and laws in this society and your expected to be like everyone else. If you are different, you are treated like an outcast.
Question ten: The character traits in Liberty 5-3000 are that they are as straight and thin as a blade of iron, and their eyes were hard and dark, with no fear in them, while their hair was golden and free, they threw seeds from their hand as if they were gods, and the earth was a beggar underneath their feet. They seem to me to be very glorious and powerful, but of course, in their society, they are restrained. They are forced to hold back.
Fear (rather than joy, excitement, anger, embarrassment, so on) is the prevalent emotion in this society because overall, the people are scared to think of themselves to much. It states in chapter 2 that at night the great hall where the men slept was completely silent because they were too afraid to say their own thoughts due to the fact that no man was allowed to disagree with another. They didn't wish to say anything in case of a difference in their thoughts. Also, fear dominates the other emotions because the people are afraid to feel too happy or too excited or too embarrassed or too angry for fear of getting in trouble with the government. In the eyes of the government, it is too self-centered to feel too much of each of those feelings. Basically, with the exception of Equality, the people are to afraid to do anything, say anything, feel anything or be anything other than what they are told too do, say, feel, or be.
Unlike all the other brothers, Equality ponders on questions that he has. This action is forbidden because the society does not want it's people to find answers. Equality also has feelings that he wishes not to have. Even though Equality fears his defining qualities, he slowly get's more comfortable with his differences. He discovers things like the feeling of love. He is astonished in which the way this new concept makes him feel. Which to me is odd, because so much of life today is based around love.
In _The Anthem_ people have quite a few feelings, but the most prevalent feeling is fear. I believe that fear is the most obvious is because of how much power the higher system has over the people. The amount of power the government have reminds me of _The Giver_. I say that because in _The Giver_ the mayor makes everyone seem equal, except for the council and him. Anyways, you see fear in how scared Liberty was when Equality was working and they smiled at each other. I don't understand who walked up or what happened, but Liberty quickly looked back down as if very scared. You can tell how much respect the higher system gets because how scared the people are of them. Because, if you fear someone, you respect them.
The character traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000- Their body was straight and thin as a blade of iron. Their eyes were dark and hard and glowing, with no fear in them, no kindness, and no guilt. Their hair was golden as the sun; their hair flew in the wind, shining and wild, as if it defied men to restrain it.
Equaltiy is struggling to think of the word that the man being burned could have said that resulted in his tongue being ripped out and being burned. He knows it's bad, but he wants to know anyway. This word could possibly be a word like 'I' or 'me', or something that makes one person just one person, and not part of an entire group.
There are many ways that this society tries to obliterate each individual's mind. One is that the men and women are separated, and are not allowed to have any contact. Also, the women are not allowed to see or keep their children, or have a choice as to who the father is. Each person's name is not individual, and they say "we" instead of "I." The people are also not allowed to be smarter than the other people in the society, and can't want anything. Everything is chosen for them, including their jobs. Nobody is allowed to be individual or have their own thoughts.
Sagely: Equality 7-2521 is more curious. He wants to find more things out. He dares to be "secretly" different. He found the underground tunnel and suggested that it be kept a secret. None of the other men would have done that. Equality 7-2521 is somewhat rebelling in his own secret way. He asks more questions, he knows more things, and he dares to wonder about the forbidden. Equality 7-2521, in his own secret, crime-ful way, is an individual.
This society tries to obliterate each individual's mind by quashing personal choices, desires, and values is by controlling their thinking. The men in this society are not allowed to think about women. Women aren't allowed to think about men. They can't choose who their mate is in life. The only interaction they get is the mating night. They have certain ages that are allowed to go to this night. Also, the COUNCIL is the one that chooses who your mate is! There's no personal choices. Also, they never get to meet their children. The children never get to meet their parents. There are no personal values, choices, or desires in this society.
8. Find several examples of the ways in which this society tries to obliterate each individual's mind (and self!) by quashing personal choices, desires, and values.
In anthem, society does not allow the people to live freely. They are not able to choose the jobs they want, but are told which they will do. The women and men are not allowed to look at each other in a sense of them having feelings or attraction to one another. They are also forced to partake in the Palace of Mating, whereas they can never meet their children and children have no idea of their parents' identity. Equality 7-2521 says he feels this ritual is wrong and it is shameful, but society forces him to do that.
I believe fear is the is the prevalent emotion in this society because the citizens were taught at a young age that if you disobeyed the rules, you were punished. Also, Equality 7-2521 talks about how a person is burned at the stake if he/she says the Unspeakable word. Having someone die in front of you for disobeying the rules creates a fear for the person that if he/she breaks the rules, they will die!
This society has thought of everything to destroy any desire to be individualized. They don't allow you to think by yourself by giving you a repetitive routine. They threaten you with death at the smallest hint of rebellion, and even if you break one law you are sent away to a detention center where they obliterate anything left of your desire to be free. They also punish you for things you can't control in a way of forcing you to be humble. Equality 7-2521 was shamed because of their height, something they can't control at all. This society has making you feel unimportant and unworthy down to a step by step system.
Equality is different from everyone of his brothers. He thinks for himself, not for his brothers. Equality has chosen his own mate which is forbidden. Her name is Liberty 5-3000, but Equality calls her The Golden One in his mind. In their society, it is forbidden to give any other brother a different name other than the one they were given by the government. Already I can tell that Equality is going to be a rebel just by the way he thinks and acts.
In this society fear is prevalent emotion because people have no control over their lives. They live in fear because one little action of liberty will have them persecuted. In Chapter 2 Equality 7-2521 describes how all his brothers are filled with fear and that when night comes and the lights put out, there filled with total relief.
The character traits of Liberty 5-3000 were their bodies were as straight and thin as a blade of grass. Their eyes were dark and glowing, showing no fear. Their hair was as golden as the sun. The society tries to obliterate each individual's mind by not letting them pick their jobs or soulmates. The men really have no say for any part of their lives. Equality 7-2521 is different from the other men because they are not afraid to break the rules and be punished. Equality wants to learn and will to what it takes to do so. I find this characteristic very odd especially in this society. I think fear is the most prevalent emotion in this society because of the unknown. Most of the men only know what they have the right to know. Equality knows more than most, so he is not as afraid of his world like the others.
Equality 7-2521 is very different from the rest of the men living in society. Most of the men in this particular society and conformists. The men surrounding Equality are going with the flow, and no one even stops to question things. Equality is secretly what they believe to be "evil." He questions everything; he strives to learn about the secrets of "The Unmentionable Times." The men around him are sad. Their eyes are dreary and dull. They don't say they are sad because it is a crime to be sad. They are meant to be happy because they are free and the have their brothers. Equality 7-2521 is not sad, though. He has found knowledge, and he has even found Liberty 5-3000. He has not yet admitted int he book that he loves Liberty, but it is very apparent that he does. She has contributed to the joy Equality feels. Equality is really nothing like his brothers. His brothers are lonely, sad, conforming people while he is the exact opposite.
Liberty 5-3000 is described as a beautiful woman in Anthem. Equality 7-2521 notices Liberty 5-3000 when he's performing his job as street sweeper. He isn't supposed to talk to her because men are forbidden to speak of women. Liberty and Equality break laws by speaking to each other.
Equality 7-2521 is so different from the other men in this community. He thinks for his own, he is willing to do things that are considered wrong in order to find the answers. The answers are not to anything extremely important yet, just things he is denied by not being able to think for himself. He meets Liberty 5-3000 and this also makes him different then the other men. He wants to get to know her even if he is not supposed too. He is willing to take the risks against the law for answers, and for love.
Question 7- Liberty 5-3000 have many character traits. Are very secretive and thin. The Equality 7-2521 hopes to speak with them but they are not aloud to. One day they Equality 7-2521 spoke to Liberty 5-3000 and it was a short conversation. Liberty 5-3000 just stares at Equality 7-2521 almost everyday they pass. They just use there eyes. There eyes were glowing and very dark. Liberty 5-3000 all have shiny blonde hair. Did not have any fear.
The Equality 7-2521 said the Liberty 5-3000 were astonishing. They were beautiful, and they were one of the most beautiful thing they have ever seen. The Liberty 7-2521 were tall. The Equality saw the Liberty one day and they wished they could see them face to face. They were afraid of them at first. It was against the council's law to talk to other people from a certain point. One day the equality and the liberty made eye contact. They then waved to each other everyday. At first the equality were scared of the liberty, so they showed respect to them. Equality feared the Liberty so they gave them there total respect. If a person fears someone they give them respect. The learned that the libery's were actually nice people.
In _Anthem_ by Ayn Rand, the society has taken away all individuality, choice, desires, and values. You are told what job you will receive, they don't take into account what you want and they force you to do whatever they want. They have to say "we" and "they" instead of talking in first person. Equality 7-2521 wished to be put in the house of the scholars but was denied and made to be a street sweeper.
I believe that the word that Equality was struggling to say was the word 'I'. As it is said in the book, Equality has said to us that if they were to ever say that word, it would mean death. That word is to show individuality while in the book you have seen everyone refer to themselves as them or by their given name. Never by I.
In the book "Anthem" Equality 7-2521 is different than the rest of the men living in the society because he has no fear. All of the other men don't dare to do anything differently than what they are told or to stand out because they have fear of what would happen if they did.
10. I think fear is the prevalent emotion because no one can really make their one decisions. The are given their career and forced to work. This creates a fear between the person and the government.
Liberty 5-3000's character traits were straight and thin as a blade of iron. They were fearless, and their eyes could not have any sense of kindness, guilt, or any emotion. These people were robots, basically.
The character traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000. Liberty 5-3000 are women. They have also been chosen to work the soil. Which means they are good with the outdoors and growing crops. Liberty has no kindness in their eyes, no guilt. Ayn Rand describes Liberty 5-3000 as what we would call very beautiful women in our society. Equality 7-2521 is very attracted to them by the way their emotions are described when seeing Liberty 5-3000 for the first time.
In Anthem by Ayn Reed Equality is trying to recapture the word I. This word is the only word punishable by death because that one word destroys their entire society. There society is trying to create everyone as a whole and once people address their individuality they will start questioning authority.
In the book the society tries to obliterate each individual's mind (and self!)by quashing personal choices, desires, and values by saying that they are not allowed to have their own dreams of what job they want to do, and they must not think of themselves better than anyone else basically. Everyone is equal to them as far as the equality ranks go. The council members are the ones who choose their job for life and they just have to go with it. They are to not dream of becoming leaders but of people that will better the community that's it.
I think fear is the prevalent emotion in this society. I believe everyone feels fearful from the leaders. The leaders all use fear of punishment for control. I think the leaders want to control everything about everyone, and they brainwash their citizens that they know what is best, and the citizens will be punished if they do not do as told. The citizens all feel the fear that if they do not live exactly like everyone else and by all the laws, they will be punished. Equality 7-2521 does not have this fear when he is underground, because he knows he is not under control and is safe from punishment.
There are several examples of the ways in which this society tries to obliterate each individual's mind by quashing personal choices, desires, and values. An example is when the boy reaches a certain age the job is chosen for them. Also they are not allowed to talk to women. This eliminates having feelings for a women. Another example is when the men and women reach a certain age they are put somewhere and they are forced to breed with someone. The final example is the people in this society are not allowed to say certain things.
Character traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000 is how straight they stood, how they had no kindness. They were very secretive and were as thin as a blade of iron. They had no guilt or far. Their hair was golden as the sun, shined while flying in the wind. This basically described the people in the "Anthem" as strange, abnormal people. They basically had everyone and everything at their feet.
Equality 7-2521 is different from the rest of his brothers physically and mentally. Physically his brothers are hunched over with their muscles drawn, their eyes are dull, and their heads are bowed. They don't look anyone in the eye. Equality 7-2521 is nothing like that. His eyes are bright and he usually isn't stooped over. Mentally in the society, the brothers aren't different from each other. They're all bland and the same, but Equality is different from the others. He's not as brainwashed.
2. The society tries to obliterate each individual's mind and self by, having them refer to themselves as 'we' or 'us'. Also by not letting them pick their jobs, or what they want to do, or how much they would like to learn. The council members or whatever don't even let them have a girlfriend, there is a 'mating day' when everyone just goes and mates to have babies. They don't get to have any choices. Equality 7-2521 would rather do all the things, he can't do. Which would get him executed. They don't even get to say what they want, if they speak the 'unmentionable word' then they get burned on the pyre. Equality 7-2521 has the urge and desire to learn more, and find out things that noone else knows. And even though he's not supposed to, he still does.
2. In this book, they seem to take away all aspects of individuality. They do not have names, and virtually everything that seems to have to do with free will is illegal if you will. They state it as "The council does not approve of..." Equality also speaks of somethings that are unspeakable, like the times? i was very confused by that. And the mysterious place that he and one of his fellow sweepers found that was posibly part of the old times. i hope they talk about that as the story unfolds.
The character traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000 are complex. She seems graceful yet mysterious. She seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel and an important character in "Anthem."
Equality 7-2521 is different from the other men in his society because he is not as afraid of his punishments. He knew fair and well that how his thoughts and actions were against the rules of his society yet he takes the risks and pays for them. He wanted to be put in the house of scholars, but is assigned as a street sweeper. As much as he wanted to be a scholar, he knew he would not. Even though he was punished, he still decided to go against some of the rules. One of which is his interaction with a women named Liberty 5-3000. It is forbidden to interact or even acknowledge the women in the society. But Equality proceeds to do so. He eventually garners feelings for her and even dares to speak with her. He proceeds to take his feelings and not do away with them. He continues to ponder the world and be curious. He even thinks about the Unspeakable Word.
In Anthem Equality 7-2521 is different than the rest of the men living in the society because they are okay with breaking some of the laws. They don't really care if they do something that is against the law if they believe what they are doing is right or if they don't agree with the law.
Question number 5. The term "The Great Rebirth" is explains the period of time the society is in now. It represents a time after an event has occurred. When I think of rebirth I think about when one is baptized. This is when Jesus came back from the dead; it resembles when a time of chaos changed into a time of change. This may become form of verbal irony as time continues.
In chapter two of Anthem, the main feeling of everyone in the society is fear. I believe that they are so scared because it was said that they were of no importance to the world. If they didn't live 100% for their brothers then they could be killed and nobody would think twice about it. In my mind I feel its sort of like being imprisoned. They tell you what not to say, not to think, and what to feel. I understand their fear because if I could be killed without a second thought, I would be scared to.
Fear is the prevalent emotion in this society because they are only allowed to think a certain way. They are not allowed to be too happy, and they are not allowed to prefer one person over another. The Council always follow the law, and their punishment is cruel.
The Liberty 5-3000 were "straight and thin as a blade of iron. Their eyes were dark and hard and glowing, with no fear in them, no kindness and no guilt. Their hair was golden as the sun; their hair flew in the wind, shining and wild, as if it defied men to restrain it. They threw seeds from their hand as if they deigned to fling a scornful gift, and the earth was as a beggar under their feet." The liberty 5-3000 were beautiful men.
Out of every emotional feeling, fear is the prevalent emotion because the people are not allowed to be an individual. Any form of individualism is cast out, a crime. How would you feel if you were forced to be exactly like everyone else? What if you were noticabbly different? What if no matter how hard you tried, you just could not be like everyone else and they cast you out anyways? I would be terrified. Never able to do anything that I, myself wanted to do would be like slavery.
Liberty 5-300 character traits: bodies were straight and thin as a blade of iron, eyes were dark and hard and glowing, no fear in them, no kindness, and no guilt. hair was golden, their hair flew in the wind, threw seeds from their hands, huge feet.

ReplyDeleteI believe fear is the is the prevalent emotion in this society because the citizens were taught at a young age that if you disobeyed the rules, you were punished. Also, Equality 7-2521 talks about how a person is burned at the stake if he/she says the Unspeakable word. Having someone die in front of you for disobeying the rules creates a fear for the person that if he/she breaks the rules, they will die!
ReplyDeleteThis society has thought of everything to destroy any desire to be individualized.
ReplyDeleteEquality is different from everyone of his brothers.
ReplyDeleteIn this society fear is prevalent emotion because people have no control over their lives. They live in fear because one little action of liberty will have them persecuted. In Chapter 2 Equality 7-2521 describes how all his brothers are filled with fear and that when night comes and the lights put out, there filled with total relief.
ReplyDeleteThe character traits of Liberty 5-3000 were their bodies were as straight and thin as a blade of grass. Their eyes were dark and glowing, showing no fear. Their hair was as golden as the sun.
ReplyDeleteThe society tries to obliterate each individual's mind by not letting them pick their jobs or soulmates.
ReplyDeleteLiberty 5-3000 is described as a beautiful woman in Anthem. Equality 7-2521 notices Liberty 5-3000 when he's performing his job as street sweeper. He isn't supposed to talk to her because men are forbidden to speak of women. Liberty and Equality break laws by speaking to each other.
ReplyDeleteEquality 7-2521 is so different from the other men in this community.

ReplyDeleteQuestion 7-
ReplyDeleteLiberty 5-3000 have many character traits.
ReplyDeleteIn _Anthem_ by Ayn Rand, the society has taken away all individuality, choice, desires, and values. You are told what job you will receive, they don't take into account what you want and they force you to do whatever they want. They have to say "we" and "they" instead of talking in first person. Equality 7-2521 wished to be put in the house of the scholars but was denied and made to be a street sweeper.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the word that Equality was struggling to say was the word 'I'. As it is said in the book, Equality has said to us that if they were to ever say that word, it would mean death. That word is to show individuality while in the book you have seen everyone refer to themselves as them or by their given name. Never by I.

ReplyDeleteIn the book "Anthem" Equality 7-2521 is different than the rest of the men living in the society because he has no fear. All of the other men don't dare to do anything differently than what they are told or to stand out because they have fear of what would happen if they did.
ReplyDelete10. I think fear is the prevalent emotion because no one can really make their one decisions. The are given their career and forced to work. This creates a fear between the person and the government.
ReplyDeleteLiberty 5-3000's character traits were straight and thin as a blade of iron. They were fearless, and their eyes could not have any sense of kindness, guilt, or any emotion. These people were robots, basically.
ReplyDeleteThe character traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000.
ReplyDeleteLiberty 5-3000 are women.
ReplyDeleteIn the book the society tries to obliterate each individual's mind (and self!)by quashing personal choices, desires, and values by saying that they are not allowed to have their own dreams of what job they want to do, and they must not think of themselves better than anyone else basically. Everyone is equal to them as far as the equality ranks go. The council members are the ones who choose their job for life and they just have to go with it. They are to not dream of becoming leaders but of people that will better the community that's it.
ReplyDeleteI think fear is the prevalent emotion in this society.
ReplyDeleteThere are several examples of the ways in which this society tries to obliterate each individual's mind by quashing personal choices, desires, and values.
ReplyDeleteCharacter traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000 is how straight they stood, how they had no kindness. They were very secretive and were as thin as a blade of iron. They had no guilt or far. Their hair was golden as the sun, shined while flying in the wind. This basically described the people in the "Anthem" as strange, abnormal people. They basically had everyone and everything at their feet.
ReplyDeleteEquality 7-2521 is different from the rest of his brothers physically and mentally.
ReplyDelete2.
ReplyDelete2.
ReplyDeleteThe character traits that are revealed in Liberty 5-3000 are complex. She seems graceful yet mysterious. She seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel and an important character in "Anthem."
ReplyDeleteEquality 7-2521 is different from the other men in his society because he is not as afraid of his punishments.
ReplyDeleteIn Anthem Equality 7-2521 is different than the rest of the men living in the society because they are okay with breaking some of the laws. They don't really care if they do something that is against the law if they believe what they are doing is right or if they don't agree with the law.
ReplyDeleteQuestion number 5.
ReplyDeleteThe term "The Great Rebirth" is explains the period of time the society is in now.
ReplyDeleteFear is the prevalent emotion in this society because they are only allowed to think a certain way. They are not allowed to be too happy, and they are not allowed to prefer one person over another. The Council always follow the law, and their punishment is cruel.
ReplyDeleteThe Liberty 5-3000 were "straight and thin as a blade of iron.
ReplyDeleteOut of every emotional feeling, fear is the prevalent emotion because the people are not allowed to be an individual.
